Mastering the Art of the Pivot: My Journey in Professional Home Organization Business

Running your own business is a journey filled with growth, challenges, and opportunities—and sometimes, it requires the willingness to completely change course. For me, the ability to pivot has been the single most important trait that’s kept my business moving forward, even during difficult times.

Two years ago, Stephanie and I had just officially agreed to join forces. As I have been reflecting on all that has transpired during the last 2 years, I wanted to share more about the ups and especially the downs that have gotten me where I am today.

If you’re currently facing challenges in your business, I hope my story inspires you to embrace change and recognize that a pivot might be the key to creating a business you truly love.

My Journey in Professional Home Organization Business Pivots

November 2021: Burnout Hits Hard

On the surface, everything looked like a dream. I had a team of 20, three lead organizers, and we were organizing the homes of high-profile clients, including the incredible Shea McGee. My calendar was booked out for three months, and we were managing 8–12 organizing projects a week.

But behind the scenes, I was drowning. I was working onsite for multiple projects each week, managing nearly all backend work myself, and neglecting my health, family, and home. By November 2021, I hit burnout.

January 2022: Bringing on a CEO and Franchising

Just when I thought I couldn’t continue, an old friend reached out with a solution. She came on as CEO and investor to help Reset Your Nest systemize and scale through Franchising. This gave me the opportunity to step back and focus on what I do best.

August 2022: Pivot to Region Model

We spent the year creating a franchise disclosure document, only to realize that franchising wasn’t the best path forward for our vision. Instead, we decided to set up regions managed by full-time salaried regional managers under central control.

Fall 2022: Winter 2023 Regional Managers and 9 Regions

From October 2022 to March 2023, we opened several locations across the U.S., including St. George, Phoenix, Bay Area, and Washington, D.C. We hired and trained teams, equipped with supplies, and marketed these regions in hopes of establishing a presence and client base that would sustain the expenses we were incurring.

2023: Pivot to Acquisition Model

In April, we acquired Sikora Solutions in Denver, founded by Stephanie. This acquisition was seamless and successful, leading us to pivot once again toward an acquisition-based growth strategy instead of building new markets from scratch.

November 2023: A Final Pivot

Despite our success, it became clear that the C-corp structure and rapid expansion weren’t sustainable. We made the difficult decision to shut down all regions and restructure. Reset Your Nest now focuses on Utah locations, while Stephanie (Sikora Solutions) returned to managing her company independently in Denver.

January 2024: A New Chapter Begins

With the lessons we learned, Stephanie and I joined forces with Ashley, our CFO, to create Reset Solutions Consulting, a company dedicated to helping professional organizers increase profitability and build sustainable businesses.

January 2025: Thriving Businesses

Now, Reset Your Nest and Sikora Solutions are both stronger than ever. We’ve built sustainable systems, delegated effectively, and set healthy boundaries. We are able to devote time to Reset Solutions Consulting which allows us to help other organizers achieve the same.

My Biggest Takeaways

This journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. Here are the lessons I’ve learned along the way:

  1. Burnout Is Real, but It Can Be Overcome

    • Burnout can feel insurmountable, but with the right help and changes, it’s possible to recover and rebuild.

  2. There Is No One Right Way to Scale

    • Every business is unique, and scaling looks different for everyone. Be open to finding what works best for your goals and resources.

  3. Pivoting Is a Part of Business

    • The ability to pivot quickly and strategically is essential for long-term success.

  4. Good Energy Toward All

    • Maintaining positive relationships and energy can open unexpected doors and opportunities.

  5. Every Failure Is a Lesson

    • Every misstep has taught me something valuable, bringing me closer to building the business I truly want.

  6. Relationships Are Invaluable

    • Strong relationships with team members, partners, and clients create a foundation for unforeseen growth and success.

Inspiring Growth for Professional Organizers

Everyone’s journey is different, but I hope my story encourages you to embrace flexibility and resilience. Being willing to pivot is hard work, but the rewards are worth it.
