How to Survive and Thrive During Summer as a Professional Home Organizer

Updated: 1 day ago

Summers can be both the most enjoyable and challenging time of the year for professional home organizers—especially if you’re balancing business with the joys (and chaos) of family life. As a mom of four and a business owner, I’ve learned that summers feel a lot like pregnancy: I’m rarely prepared enough for what’s coming, and by the time it’s over, I forget just how intense it was until the next one rolls around!

In this post, I’ll share how to survive summer and make it a time for growth, profit, and connection—both personally and professionally.

The Challenges of Summer

Summers bring unique challenges for professional organizers:

Personally:

Summer is when I want to soak up time with my kids. Late nights, vacations, and the lack of a strict routine bring joy, but also guilt—guilt for the time spent working (and neglecting my kids) and guilt for time spent playing (and neglecting my work).

Clients:

Smaller organizing projects often take a backseat during the summer. With clients traveling, kids home, and general chaos, reorganizing a pantry or closet doesn’t feel urgent to most families.

The good news? People are moving! Moves are our bread and butter during the summer and have made this season our highest revenue-generating time of year. (Check out our blog post on why moves are our favorite type of project and our Concierge Move Playbook for tips!)

Staffing:

With kids out of school, many team members want time off for travel and family. Finding the right balance to staff big jobs while accommodating everyone’s schedules can feel like a juggling act.

Strategies to Survive Summer

Here are the strategies I’ve developed to make summers successful both at home and in my business:

1. Prioritize Time With Family

Set clear boundaries around your work schedule and carve out time for family fun. Whether it’s a family vacation, weekly outings, or a few hours blocked off each day, intentionally planning family time helps reduce guilt and ensures you’re making the most of summer memories.

2. Shift Your Focus to Moves

Moving season is summer’s silver lining. Here’s why:

  • High Revenue Potential: Moves typically involve multiple areas of the home and require detailed planning, which means larger projects and bigger paychecks.

  • Client Need: Families often need help downsizing, packing, and setting up their new homes—perfect opportunities for professional organizers.

Pro tip: Develop a clear process for concierge move services and train your team to handle the logistics. This ensures that you can take on these larger projects with confidence and efficiency.

3. Staff Smarter, Not Harder

Hire Summer Help: College students, teachers, or others looking for seasonal work can be a fantastic addition to your team during busy months.

Plan Ahead: Have your team share their summer availability early so you can schedule big projects effectively.

Flexibility Is Key: Be prepared to adjust schedules or take on temporary help to ensure coverage.

4. Offer Summer-Specific Services

If smaller projects are slowing down, create summer-specific packages tailored to clients’ needs during this season. For example:

  • Pre-travel organization (packing tips, luggage organization)

  • Post-travel reset (unpacking, laundry solutions)

  • Kid-friendly organization projects (playroom makeovers, craft station setups)

5. Keep Systems Streamlined

When your schedule is unpredictable, it’s even more important to rely on systems that keep your business running smoothly. Tools like scheduling software, communication apps, and detailed checklists can help you stay organized, even when life feels hectic.

Lessons I’ve Learned Over the Summers

Flexibility and Planning Are Essential: Embrace the chaos and plan ahead as much as possible to ensure you can handle the unexpected.

Boundaries Make All the Difference: Saying no to certain things (whether it’s an extra project or another late-night email) can give you the breathing room you need to enjoy summer.

Invest in Your Team: A well-prepared and flexible team can be your greatest asset during busy times.

Lean Into What Works: For us, that’s been moves. Identify your biggest summer revenue driver and focus your efforts there.

Embrace Summer as a Season for Growth

Summers are always a balancing act, but they don’t have to be overwhelming. With the right strategies, you can make this season your most profitable time of year while still enjoying the flexibility, sunshine, and joy that summer brings.
